Sara Horein SBR Athlete Triathlon
  • 1. Please tell us a little background info about yourself.

I am Sara Horein. I am 42 years old and live in Madison, WI. I grew up enjoying sports but only really had a little athletic prowess. Unbeknownst to me, my journey as a triathlete started in 2011 when my husband and I completed a 3-day 300-mile charity bike ride. From there, I slowly started running on and off with friends to spend more time outdoors. In 2019, I decided to challenge myself by completing a sprint triathlon. Having never swum, I entered the pool at age 38 to learn to put my face in the water, hold my breath, and blow bubbles. Conquering my fear of the water to learn to swim has been pivotal in my triathlon journey. Today, I have completed multiple sprints and 70.3 triathlons, as well as a half marathon and two full marathons.

    2. For how long have you been training with SBR?

    Four years

    3. What sport(s) do you primarily participate in?

    Swim, Bike, Run

    4. What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

The personal training and coaching help me to achieve my athletic goals. But the community is what energizes me! I have made fantastic, supportive friends at SBR over the past few years.

    5. What are some of your athletic goals that you’re working towards?

I want to run all six world major marathons. I have run the Boston and Chicago marathons by supporting the American Red Cross. Ultimately, I would like to qualify for one of the world majors in my age group.

    6. What motivates you or keeps you going?

Training has been excellent for my mental health. The clarity and calm I feel when swimming, biking, or running keep me going. On the days I'm not so motivated, I have my “SBR squad” whom I can call on for inspiration.

    7. What is one of your most memorable moments in your athletic life?

It would be finishing my first 70.3 Ironman in Des Moines, Iowa. I had support from some great SBR people to sign up for this event as it was flatter; I had never swum that distance in open water before, and I had several friends from out of town and in town who came to celebrate my finish.

    8. What is something about yourself that people may not know about you?

I am an active volunteer leader for the American Red Cross and serve as an independent monitor for the Measles and Rubella Partnership. Through this health initiative, I have managed several teams in Kenya, Indonesia, and Malawi focused on vaccination campaigns for 35 million children from 9 months to 14 years old.

  • 1. Please tell us a little background info about yourself.

Single with two amazing sons, I've spent a large portion of my adult life in public service, primarily in the military and also working for the State of Wisconsin. My passion for helping people has carried over into the private sector where I work in the field of retirement programs and planning. I had a great experience playing college football. I enjoy spending time outdoors be it skiing, both downhill and cross country, taking in a hike or better yet snowshoeing on the Ice Age trail or a kayak down the Sugar River. Mixed in with that is having fun in any shape, way, manner or form.

    2. For how long have you been training with SBR?

I worked with Coach Jessica a bit pre-SBR, but military duty kept me from a regular civilian training schedule. I came off of active duty in 2013 and my earliest recollection of official SBR training began in 2014.

    3. What sport(s) do you primarily participate in?

I guess as a sport, triathlon. For me, though, it is more of a lifestyle, always trying harder to get better and having a good time doing it.

    4. What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

Hmm, is everything an answer? Some think that SBR stands for Swim/Bike/Run. My favorite part of training with SBR is that is so much more than that. What SBR does is help build a base for any positive step forward. The shared commitment of the community and learning from each other is a cornerstone of Coach Martin's philosophy of "Keep Moving Forward." The Masters Swimming program is certainly a favorite as you develop overall fitness while sharing gasps between sets with your lane mates. Biking indoors gives you the chance to bring some light to darker winters (although I'm not there so much for the training as I am for the playlists!) Every outdoor ride is a chance to appreciate what an incredible area we have to bike in even as you're looking at each other wondering if the hill you're trying to climb will ever end. With the running opportunities, the SBR community offers the chance to get better every session. The Winter Relay is an amazing opportunity for the SBR community to help organizations help others. Not to be missed is the Winter Triathlon, especially cheering on the college athletes! With the confidence and shared commitment developed through SBR's training, when it comes to a challenging race or day in the office, SBR gives you the ability to Smile, Breath and Relax.

    5. What are some of your athletic goals that you’re working towards?

Wouldn't it be fun to be doing triathlons when you're 90? I think so! Working towards that, I am always pursuing that lifestyle of getting better and trying new things. This year that new twist will be draft legal racing.

    6. What motivates you or keeps you going?

This one for me is simple: Life's too short and happiness too rare.

    7. What is one of your most memorable moments in your athletic life?

Oooh, tough one, actually because there are so many. One thing that stands out is being able to train alongside Kendall Gretsch...well, at least being in the same pool!

Another memorable experience was doing the West Point Triathlon as a relay with my son Connor and my brother right after his deployment.

    8. What is something about yourself that people may not know about you?

When I was younger and had hair (something that people may not know about me!), I dreamed of having a German Shepard. In September that dream came true when a 2 ½ year old Shepard, Rookie, needed a new home. Dreams do come true!

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

I earned my PhD in solid state physics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1987 and was on the faculty at Madison until 1990. I joined Nicolet Biomedical where I oversaw the development of a variety of medical devices. I joined a start-up technology company, Cyberkinetics, in 2003 to design and manufacture brain implants that listen to the neurons talk to each other. I then spent 5 years teaching AP courses in Calculus, Physics and Computer Science.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

This is my first season at SBR.

Why did you join SBR? What do you like best about training here?

I do a lot of solo riding and training, so I joined SBR so I can remember how to talk to people. The equipment and training plans are excellent so I can improve my FTP while training in a group setting.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

I ride in the Tuesday/Thursday PBC class, and the indoor charity events are fun.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

I primarily bike but sometimes I’ll run hills at Elver Park. I also like skate skiing but the winters have been a little unpredictable so I tend to ride indoors more frequently than I used to.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

Typical for me are 2-3 road races and 6 or 7 Zwift indoor races.

Nancy SBR Biking Running Coach
  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

I grew up in Kaukauna where I ran cross country, track, and played basketball in high school. From there I went to St. Norbert College and ran cross country and track for the Green Knights, graduating in 1992. I decided to go back to school to obtain my teaching degree in 6-12 Social Studies and have been teaching social studies classes since then – most recently 8th grade US History at Velma Hamilton Middle School. I've also been extremely lucky to coach cross country for the St. Norbert women for 8 seasons and more recently, the Madison East boys for 11 seasons -

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

Almost one year. It started when I joined the Tuesday/Thursday morning open water swimming last summer.

Why did you join SBR? What do you like best about training here?

It helped that one of my friends was starting to train with SBR – that helped me give SBR a try. What I like best is pushing through tough workouts with an exceptional group of people. Everyone in SBR inspires me.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

Honestly I like ALL OF IT! I’ve loved the Saturday morning PBC rides this past winter, the OWS last summer, and now I am really happy to be doing the running workouts with a great group of people Tuesday and Thursday evenings. This is my first year receiving one-on-one coaching and I absolutely love the challenging workouts Bill puts together for me. I truly appreciate his thought behind each workout.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

Now I primarily focus on triathlon – though my background is definitely running.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

USAT Age Group Sprint Nationals is my “A” race where I hope to put together the best race I possibly can.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

After graduating from SNC in 1992, I bought myself a graduation present: a red Trek 1400 aluminum road bike. Within a week, it was stolen from my mom’s garage. When talking to the police, I was leaning against my car – a 1983 silver/rusted/dented Honda Civic. The police officer couldn’t believe my bike was worth more than my car. It was.

I grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania but moved to Wisconsin from Dallas, Texas in 2011. I currently live in Verona with my husband Matt and our two sons, Oliver and Alfie, and our dog Albus. I went to Penn State University so I’m always very happy to cheer on my Nittany Lions but actually did buy a Wisconsin shirt last year, shhh...

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I started open water swimming and biking with SBR last summer.

Why did you join SBR? What do you like best about training here?

I heard good things about them from my friends at Fleet Feet and it is right around the corner from me so it seemed like a great place to start my triathlon training! I love the group classes, they aren’t gigantic and people can be on different levels but I have never felt out of place since I’m new to this sport. Last summer swimming was great, swimming with people faster than me really pushed me harder and biking this winter was fantastic! I’m so much stronger all around after indoor PBC classes this past winter.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

I have swam since I was a small kid when my dad lied to me and said I was on the swim team but only to find out last year it was just free swim he would drop me off at. But, I would have to say I’m a runner. Primarily, I train for half marathon distance races. Maybe next year will be my year to jump into a marathon and a 70.3!

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I am doing my first Olympic triathlon this year - if I don’t sign up for one sooner it will be Chicago in August. I also want to beat my time from last year at Devil’s Lake and I am swimming the Big Swell 1.2mile swim in July!

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I used to be a ski and snowboard instructor in upstate New York and competed in a few halfpipe competitions while in high school.

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

My wife (Teresa) and I moved to Wisconsin 20 years ago from Reno, Nevada to raise our kids (Cameron and Mackenzie) in a place with better education and healthcare. They both went through the Verona School District and graduated from UW Madison. It was while our kids were in college that Teresa and I started exercising with a zero to 5K class 3½ years ago. We are now exercising 7 days a week.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I had my first experience with SBR 2½ years ago when I did my first triathlon, the indoor Winter Wonderland triathlon. It was a lot more challenging than I thought it would be. The swim was the most difficult part by far, thank goodness for walls in a lap pool. From there I started the master swim class where I started in lane one. It was a great start to my career. I now have Bill as my full-time coach.

Why did you join SBR? What do you like best about training here?

I first joined SBR for the indoor swimming class. I appreciate the coaching style of Bill and Anna with the swim class. This year Bill is coaching me as an overall triathlon coach. He listens to my needs and pushes me at each level of each event.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

I do not have a primary sport unless triathlons are considered primary. I would say that I am probably strongest on the bike but have made some of my biggest jumps in improvement in swimming and running.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I have focused this year on Ironman Wisconsin. This is my first Ironman. I have done many Sprints, a few Olympics, two Half Irons, a few half marathons and one full marathon so I felt it was time to go big.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

Since Teresa and I joined our first running class, I have lost 70 pounds. This weight loss has helped me in my training and competing in all my events and overall made me just a healthier person. Did I forget to mention that Teresa was my favorite training partner?

2018 FEATURES

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

I am an older athlete (66) and have had a lot of life experiences. I’m married to a wonderful man who supports my athletic adventures. We have 2 children and two granddaughters. I’ve always been athletic. As a kid I swam competitively. High school sports for women didn’t exist for girls or at least not at the school I went to. I would have liked to try to play basketball. I swam competitively in college. After college I started running, after all it was the 70’s and this was the new fad. I liked running and found that I was fairly good at it. I qualified for and ran in three Boston Marathons. In the 80’s I started X-country skiing and with the help of a few years of living in Europe completed the Worlddloppet ski marathon series to win my Worldloppet medal in 1986. I turned to triathlon in the 90’s. I completed my first Ironman at the ripe old age of 53. Since then I have completed two more full distance Ironman races and several Half Iron distance races. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to go to Worlds in the Half Iron distance twice and to participate in Age Group Nationals Olympic distances the last three years. I’ve also had two wonderful careers over the years. I was a dental hygienist for 12 years and then changed careers in my mid-thirties and am now an Occupational therapist.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I first came to SBR in the summer of 2009.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

Desperation drove me to SBR. I had completed two Ironman full distance triathlons as a self-coached athlete but I was always showing up at the starting line exhausted and not very confident in my training. I’d complete the races but was a total physical wreck after them. For example, after my 1st Ironman I ended up in the medical tent needing multiple IVs. I sought Coach Jessica’s help for my 3rd attempt at Ironman Wis. This time it was a whole different story. She had me cut out all of the junk miles and gave me a more focused training program. It worked. I improved my finish time by almost an hour, never saw the inside of the med tent, and quickly recovered from the event. Needless to say I have stayed because of the excellent coaching.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

My favorite class at SBR is the winter Performance Based Cycling. It’s a great way to maintain or even improve your biking fitness level, meet new and interesting people, and it also makes the winter go by a lot faster. My favorite service is Jessica’s dynamic bike fitting service. I can’t speak highly enough about this invaluable service. It has increased my comfort level on my bike, increased my efficiency (think watts and endurance) and helped to prevent injury by indicating muscle imbalances I’ve had.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

I now primarily participate in the Half Ironman distance triathlons. They seem to be a better fit for me. I feel like I don’t have to give up my life to train for them, yet they are challenging events for me. Here’s the thing about being an older athlete, yes there are fewer people in your age group, but the people that are there are really, really good. As I found out last September at the Half Ironman World Championships in Chattanooga Tennessee a lot of the women in my age group were x-Olympians or x-pros who have joined the age group ranks. So get yourself a good coach if you are thinking about Worlds.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

I have two favorite parts about training with SBR. First is that I have learned so much about correct training (periodization) and about using correct form in all three sports. Correct form helps you move more efficiently and it also helps to keep you injury free. I find that SBR coaches are very good at spotting incorrect movement patterns and at helping you correct them. My second favorite part is meeting new and interesting people that share a common interest in triathlon. Fellow athletes participating in various coaching programs I’ve been in have always given me support and I have been motivated by them to do my best. I know that I would not train as hard on my own or have as much fun going through tough workouts.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

My racing goal this year is to go back to Age Group Nationals for the Olympic distance triathlon and finish well enough to qualify for World’s next year, which will be held in Lausanne Switzerland.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I lived and worked in Luzern Switzerland as a dental hygienist for three years (1983-1986). In 1984 I went to the winter Olympics held in Sarajevo as an alternate on the Swiss women’s X-country team. I never skied but I was there and it was a great experience.

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

I left home when I was 13, and later attended boarding school in Lake Forest, IL. I finally got a degree in Chinese Language and Literature at UW Madison. I left the US in 1987 with no money and only student loan debt to go live with a family in Thailand, and then later Taiwan. After failing to find long term gainful employment, I started a small business importing bicycle parts and accessories into Taiwan. I stayed in Taiwan for 23 years and grew my business, later expanding in China and Hong Kong. I also met my wife in Taiwan where my son was born. In 2013 I decided to return to the US with my family and run my business remotely. I went back to school and got my MBA from the UW in 2015. I am now a partner in a non profit consulting company out of Milwaukee.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I have been riding or swimming at SBR for 3 ½ years.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I joined SBR to lose weight and get in shape. This was my main motivator for joining a cycling class. I have stayed mostly due to the friendly environment. Being around and training with triathletes was a great motivator to stay fit and also try to keep up a bit.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

That depends which day you ask me this question on. I really enjoyed PBC riding outside in the summer with a small group. I also very much enjoyed morning swim when I wasn’t in the fast lane.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

I have swum most of my life. It was my main sport. I only started cycling 4 years ago. Slowly I got better and did full and half Ironman.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

My favorite part is the atmosphere. I also very much like the calm humble approach of Coach Bill towards all the athletes. Too many other places only focus on the star athletes.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I might do a race or two in the Wisconsin Triathlon series. Mostly I want to lose more weight and not have sore legs.

Eric: I live in McFarland with my wife Lori, and two dogs, Odin, and Dot. Cycling is only one of my many hobbies. Other hobbies include fishing, tackle making, shooting, hiking, custom leather work, woodworking, general handyman stuff, reading, and playing guitar. Time for hobbies and family has become easier since retiring from law enforcement and the Wisconsin Air National Guard.

Lori: I live in McFarland with hubby Eric and two crazy terriers. Fitness has always been a part of my life. The early part of my athletic career was spent hitting millions of tennis balls in preparation for playing varsity tennis in both high school and college. Running was next in an effort to stay in shape post- college followed by a return to competitive tennis and another shot at running. Triathlon started in 2007 as a new and out of my comfort zone activity. Learning to swim at 48 and then completing the Ironman swim is one of my proudest moments. Other hobbies include yoga, weight lifting, walking, art, drawing, fishing, interior design, reading, and gardening.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

    Both: Since January 2008.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

Both: We set up a consultation with Coach J in January of 2008 in preparation for Ironman Wisconsin that year. Her expertise and training plan got us to the finish line happy and healthy. PBC started for us in 2009 on Tuesday and Thursday AM. The high level of personal attention, welcoming and supportive environment, and the expertise of the coaches.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

Lori: PBC is both fun and challenging. The coaching is highly personalized and we have gotten to know so many wonderful people. I did an outstanding bike fit session with Jessica prior to getting my customized Alchemy. The service from Jessica and Pete with Rocket Bikes was outstanding.

Eric: I have really enjoyed the coaches and classmates in PBC over the years. I appreciate how each class has a purpose, and fits into a larger plan for increasing cycling fitness and efficiency. The coaches are very supportive and a great resource, and work with us on form. I have very relaxed shoulders (ha!). I received a bike fit from Jessica, which made it very easy to find the right road bike and set-up.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

    Both: Cycling.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

Eric: I have really enjoyed the all of the coaches and classmates over the years.

Lori: The coaches and all of our fellow PBC athletes. We have so much fun and I have a whole new appreciation for different types of music!

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

Lori: Getting back to some sort of fitness activity in the form of organized biking events. Recovery from a broken hip due to a mountain biking accident in 2016 is complete however, running is no longer possible. The Syttende Mai 17 mile walk may be a future event.

Eric: Racing is no longer part of my life, but cycling is a large part of my fitness program and my goal of living a healthy life. PBC really helps me toward that goal.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

Lori: I have “hardware” in three different parts of my body.

Maria Weber Athlete Feature
  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

I have always been active throughout my life starting with growing up as a tomboy in Oshkosh, WI. My favorite sports were tennis, gymnastics, and swimming. When I was 15 I experienced a severe injury playing basketball which eventually led to major surgery on my knee at 16 years old. This slowed me down some but didn't stop me. Fast forward to my 40's when my knee started to deteriorate with arthritis. I stopped running and started cycling. I found that I really enjoyed it and my knee could tolerate it pretty well because it was non-weight bearing. I have now been cycling for over 12 years.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

LOL! I had to go back through my calendars to figure this one out. I started with the PBC classes in the 2010-11 season. And except for the year I had my total knee replacement surgery, I have done the classes every year since.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I initially joined because I wanted to ride/train through the winter season. I liked the idea of training with CompuTrainers and also using your own bike. I have stayed because it is a lot of fun and I have seen so much improvement with my cycling over the years.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

By far I love the people and the staff. I have been in the 9am T/Th classes since I started. People come and go over the years but we all are there because we love to cycle. The attitude is fun, supportive and everyone encourages you to do your best.

You recently returned to training following a major surgery. Can you talk a little about that, and how the recovery process has been going?

About 8 years ago I noticed that my "bad" knee was slipping and not as stable as it usually was. Running just felt weird. I thought I had torn an ACL and so I went to my orthopedic surgeon thinking I was in for a 3-6 month process to get it repaired and rehabbed. My surgeon told me that what I needed was a new knee. I was devastated! I was only in my mid 40's! I managed to hobble on it for 6 more years until it got to the point where I literally could not walk for more than 1/2 mile on a flat surface. But it was when my biking started to suffer that I decided it was time (LOL! Priorities! Biking over walking!)

On December 8th, 2015 I went "under the knife". I will be frank, it was hard. This was my third surgery on this knee and it was very complicated. Recovery took a long time. I had to relearn how to walk up hills and practice doing the stairs. But I started out on my bike on the trainer just trying to get the pedal to go all the way around. (This was an easy way to work on range of motion) It wasn't until 9 months later that I finally felt I was in a better position than before surgery.

Today, I LOVE my knee. I hardly think about it anymore. It doesn't hurt like it used to and my leg is now as strong as the other one. I can even get out of the saddle again when biking. The one limitation I have is that it doesn't bend as much as the other one. This means I cannot sit on my heels and I have to be careful squatting down.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

It has now been over 2 years since my surgery and I am looking to maximize my fitness and see just what my new knee can do. With this in mind, I bought a new bike. I had been thinking about a new bike for three years but couldn't justify it with such a disabled knee. As an aging athlete, I think that equipment is more important than ever. A good bike with the right fit and equipment makes the ride more comfortable. And, when you are comfortable you want to stay out on the roads longer.

With this in mind, I have signed up for the Assault on Mt. Mitchell in May! This ride will challenge me but I look forward to training for it and actually doing it with a group of great women. I will also do the 70.3 Wisconsin in June as a relay. I will swim and bike while my husband will run. We did this last year for the first time so I am looking to improve my (our) time. Lastly, I will do Race the Lake in August. I've done this race three times prior to my surgery. It is a lot of fun for me as I grew up on Lake Winnebago and the ride goes right by my street. I also like that it is flat for the first 45 miles. Around Madison it is hard to find a road that doesn't have some degree of climbing involved.

I love to do events more to train for them than to race them. Some days I need a reason to go out on my bike, especially if it is raining or I am tired. Having my goals in place early helps keep me focused and doing my best.

I am 16 years old and a junior attending Oregon High School. I have a younger brother who is a freshman at Oregon as well. My dad, Paul, also trains with SBR. When I was younger I played all kinds of spots like football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and swimming. The sport that I enjoyed the most was swimming, and I have stuck with it since. Currently I am on the Oregon High School swim team where I mainly swimming the 50 and 100 freestyle. I am currently most interested in engineering and hope to pursue that career path in college. I did my first triathlon when I was 5 years old, at the Oregon Kid’s Triathlon. I did that race and other kids tri’s until I started training with SBR during the summer of 2016.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I have been training with SBR for a little less than two years now. When I first joined SBR I was introduced to draft legal triathlon, and being a big fan of professional cycling, with a love for swimming, this format really intrigued me. 2 year ago I started racing this format and have really enjoyed it. My first year, I raced the super sprint distance (375m swim, 10km bike, 2.5km run) in the youth division(13-15 years old). Then last year I moved up to the junior division(16-19 years old) and started racing sprint distance.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I joined SBR after my dad found SBR looking for a masters swim class. He had been doing triathlons for 25 years and wanted to become a better swimmer. I was having some trouble with my free stroke at the time and he recommended I have Coach Martin take a look at it to see if he could tweak it to make it more efficient. After looking at my swim stroke he wondered if I would be interested in racing more competitively in triathlon. I took a summer off of swimming to perform in the Shadow Armada marching band and then started thinking more about triathlon over the winter swim season. Then in April of 2016 I got interested and took up training and racing with SBR. I have stayed with SBR because of the opportunity to race at a higher level in triathlon and the knowledge of the coaches. My race plan has gone from go out and try not to die, to knowing how to pace myself, when to attack the field, when to back off and slow down a little, when to push the pace, and when to realise that the guys you're with are way too fast to keep up with. My training has also gone to the next level with the amount of depth each of the workouts have and knowing what part of your race each workout is going to help with.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

My favorite part about training with SBR is open water swims. Before joining SBR, I had only swam in a pool and thought that a lake was just a bigger pool with no walls. I was totally wrong about that though, But with more experience, I have learned to really enjoy swimming open water. Being able to get more comfortable with the format really helped and the coaches were a huge help in teaching me how it was different from swimming in the pool and how to be able to succeed in swimming open water. Now whenever I have an open water swim scheduled, I really look forward to it!

You recently returned to training following a major injury. Can you talk a little about what happened, and how the recovery process has been going?

This summer was my first year racing the junior division and racing sprint distances and I was hoping to qualify for Junior Nationals at a draft legal race in Pleasant Prairie. I had done two races leading up to this race and those had gone great. When the day of the race came I was excited and nervous at the same time. The start of the swim went off fine and I came out in a great position. My first transition went great and during the bike I got into a group that was working together and I moved up to a better position than I was out of the swim. Then coming in to my second transition it all fell apart. As I was coming of the bike to transition to the run one of my cycling shoes had come out of it cleat and knocked my chain off the chain ring. The loose shoe then knocked my back wheel up and over knocking me to the ground. As I was falling the back of my heel was cut open by the exposed chain ring. The chain ring cut deep in my leg and severed my Achilles tendon. 10 days later I was in surgery to have the two parts pulled back together and attached with a carbon fiber mesh. I was then on crutches for 6 weeks and then in a boot for 2 weeks after that. I started physical therapy a week after surgery to and then did therapy for 16 weeks post surgery. The first activity I was cleared for was cycling. It had to be on a trainer with the wheel barely touching the flywheel and for 5 minutes twice a day. This was a major bummer because when my physical therapist said that I was getting cleared to bike, I thought I would be able to return to the amount of cycling I was doing before the injury. The most shocking thing that happened during my therapy was when my therapist told me to stand on my tip toes. The Achilles is the tendon that allows for plantar flexion which allows you to be able to press the gas pedal or point your toes, and stand on your tiptoes. So as I made the attempt nothing happened and that's when the severity of the injury became real for me. As I worked through the recovery process I slowly built the tendon back up and I can now go up on my tiptoe on the injured leg alone. About a month ago I had my final follow up appointment with the surgeon where I was finally cleared to run. Now the goal is to return to and surpass the form I had before the injury.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

My biggest goal this year is to qualify for the Junior Elite National Championships. Another one of my goals is to race more. My main training related goal is to become a faster runner. Between recovery and swimming, I haven't been able to run as much as I would like, so I hope once swim wraps up I can start putting in the work to return to form.

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

My husband, Rich, and I live in Madison with our two sons, Nick (19) and JJ (17.) We have two amazing but crazy young black labs. I grew up on Long Island, NY, where I enjoyed fishing, the beach, and eating fried clam strips. My dad was an elite distance runner so I spent many hours at the track sitting in the long jump pit while he did his endless training. (I inherited my mother’s running ability.)

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I began training at SBR several years ago during the second season of indoor PBC. To be honest, I have no idea how long ago it was! At about the same time, Coach Jess started training me for my second IM after a long hiatus due to Achilles surgeries. I am currently being trained by Coach Bill. PS - we looked it up and Chrissi has been a part of the SBR family since 2011!!

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I have continued with SBR because the coaches know me well after all of these years. SBR athletes run the gamut from beginner recreational to elite level so it is always easy to find somewhere to fit in. Biking is my favorite sport and I have seen myself improve year to year not only because of the coaching, but because I have found other cyclists that have pushed me on even casual group rides.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

My favorite class is certainly 9AM T/Th PBC. Many us have been attending the same class for years! I guarantee we have more fun than any other class and we have curated a collection of excellent Spotify music. My custom bike and fit service years ago with Jess has been instrumental to my cycling. I rode (haha tagged along) with a professional cyclist in Australia last fall and he commented on my good form. He agreed that my bike fit was a big factor and said a good fit can definitely give a cyclist some extra watts.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

In college I was a rower. When I lived in Boston, I began mountain biking. The mountain bike was traded for a road bike when I moved to Madison. Now, I primarily participate in biking events and triathlons.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

My favorite part about training with SBR is participating in all of the coached classes. Theses classes provide me an opportunity to push myself harder than if I were training alone. Having a coach at the classes is ideal for feedback. Also, the camaraderie of the people at SBR is fantastic. Newbies are welcomed warmly and us oldies return year after year.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I am doing IM WI this year. I recently discovered a love for trail running so I hope to continue. Also, I want to learn how to race walk! (Did you know the fastest mile race walked is 5:31 mins?) I think this is a great option for those who want to be competitive in triathlons but cannot run for various reasons. I would like to walk an 8:30-9 minute mile!

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I was once in a PhD program for electrical engineering because I wanted to teach and do research at the university level. At the start of my 3rd year, I decided academia was definitely not for me so I left with my MS and worked as a software developer.

Pete Lemberger Swim Bike Run
  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

Born and raised pretty much my whole life in Madison, with a few stints in the Chicago area. I’m 53 years old. My wife and I have three kids, two in college, one in high school. They’ve been fantastic and flexible supporting me in training and racing events. It’s not always easy juggling family and training time. I learned quickly to be creative with getting in workouts around kid’s baseball, softball, football, volleyball, etc. First Coach Jessica, now Coach Bill have been great tailoring flexible training schedules.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

It’s been about nine years since I first met Coach Jessica Laufenberg, who I was referred to for helping me through some calf issues that flare up when running. As I learned what SBR had to offer, along with the camaraderie of select group training, the relationship grew from there. The first coached race I participated in was the Door County Half Iron, where I cut over 30 minutes off my time from the previous year.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

Initially, I started with the open water swim classes. I had done a few triathlons on my own, but then decided to take the plunge and have Coach Jessica take over training plans. It was an education to see the difference between my version and her version of training plans! I’ve stayed with it mostly because of the relationships with the coaches (Bill Martin) and other athletes (misery loves company!). It is also important to me that there is a degree of accountability, knowing the coaches are watching.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

I have been involved with open water swimming the longest, and have also done a few seasons of winter biking class. Not sure I can pick a favorite. The bunch I seem to be in class with make them all a lot of fun.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

Triathlon, although now being involved in that for the last several years, my golf game sinks.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

It’s the people. Sharing stories, learning from each other, and seeing so many different abilities come together is great. Whether it’s a first timer or seasoned veteran, everyone appreciates each other. We’ve all been through that “first race” and the ups and downs of the triathlon experiences. At SBR you’re never alone.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I did Ironman Wisconsin in 2016. That was kind of the “it” race for me. Now, my main focus is to stay fit. I just did Lake Mills, and am scheduled to do the DC Half in July. As far as goals, finishing still tops the list! I’m never going to set any records, but the challenge and sense of accomplishment after completing any size event is what drives me.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

In the previous section, I mentioned not setting any records. A few years back I did compete in the Age Group National Championship in Milwaukee. I won my age group in the first SBR Winter Triathlon to qualify. I was the only one in my age group! SBR has been such an important part of my life over the last several years, and I look forward to many more. I can’t thank them enough for the support and care they have given me. It’s made a big difference in who I am.

Kim Neitzel SBR Athlete Triathlon
  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

Living in Verona for 15+ years, married with two kids – Robin (hubs); Nicole (20) and Nathan (17). Have always been very active playing sports through high school, lifelong bike rider & eventually triathlon. The last 15 years has been spent working and chasing the kiddos to their various athletic or academic events! Now that the kids are older, I’m finding that extra time to pick up those activities that were left behind years ago!

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

Since November 2016 – swim, bike & run small group training during summer and PBC & swimming during winter.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I was looking to get back into triathlon after leaving the sport behind 20 years ago. Strength/conditioning was the first focus – about 3 years building base. I wanted to take my training to the next level and get back into Tri events – with the goal to compete in a ½ Ironman - finish, have fun and be injury free. As I began exploring my options, I found SBR & reached out to Jessica Laufenberg who I had met years ago, I believe through HeadHunters Tri club. I was encouraged by their commitment to community, program completeness and safety. An added bonus was the proximity to home (Verona)! I’ve stayed because of the small community feel, the exceptional coaching and the many wonderful friendships formed! I worked 1:1 with Bill Martin and we had the mutual understanding that I want to achieve my goals by training smart – quality over quantity – it has been successful!

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

There are so many – Winter Wonderland, 24 hr relay and the Christmas movie (Elf – Will Ferrel) ride rank high up there. Fun events to break up the winter months!

What sport do you primarily participate in?

    Triathlon

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

In general – I really love all of the group sessions! The general theme across all (swim, bike, run) is the attention to the mechanics and form to improve performance. There is a purpose & focus to all of the workouts. It’s not just about getting in the mileage!

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

Last year, I traveled to Boulder to compete in the 5430 ½ IM and while I finished within my goal time, the altitude did affect my performance. I vowed my next ½ would be Ironman branded, local and closer to sea level! My ‘A’ race is the Madison ½ IM that just happened this past weekend. Given the race day conditions (rain prior to the start) I was happy with my finish time – PR over Boulder and hugely improved run time – even with a mammoth blister! I’m also participating in the Wisconsin Tri Series so I can collect all 7 medals to form the state of Wisconsin! Finally, I’m working to improve my run times. I’m hoping that competing in several shorter – sprint/Olympic events – will get me closer to that goal.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

Before I travelled to Boulder last year, Peter Oyen showed me how to dis-assemble and re-assemble my bike (pedals, seat, handlebars, fork, derailleur, wheels). Upon arrival, I successfully assembled it with no parts remaining! I felt very accomplished!

Madison UW Triathlon SBR Coaching
  • Provide a little background about yourself.

I’m Madison Kohl, and I’m a nursing student here at UW Madison. I cannot believe I am coming up to my senior year this fall, where I will also be beginning my masters degree in public health. I am really excited to spend my first summer working here in Madison and to see how I can improve my training. At the beginning of my freshman year, I was new to the sport as one could be. I ended up falling in love with the team here at UW, met a lot of amazing people, and it has been an experience that I want to hold on to. Because of these reasons, I became the social coordinator for the [UW triathlon] team, so I could become a greater part in the team’s camaraderie, and create the perfect balance of hard work and fun that drew me in. I may not be a standout triathlete just yet, but from where I began it seems like leaps and bounds, and I know I have plenty of room to grow.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

As for long term goals, I hope to complete a marathon and Ironman at some point in the future. I have seen teammates complete these races throughout the past couple of years, and it has been truly inspiring, but I think I should start off with baby steps for now.

What makes you excited to continue to pursue triathlon?

Overall, when I think of triathlons, I don’t just think of three sports anymore. I think of all of the memories I have made with the team, all the opportunities that have come about, and all of the goals that I have and will one day accomplish.

(Picture taken after finishing my first century ride with the UW Triathlon Team this past January - WAHOO!)

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

    Just over a year now.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I joined SBR because I enjoyed the indoor biking classes and was looking for a coach to come up with a training plan for me so I could have a successful first half ironman Madison 2017. The classes and coaching were challenging, fun, and has allowed me to make so many new friends.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

My favorite class is weekend PBC (Performance Based Cycling).

What sport do you primarily participate in?

A few years back all I did was half marathons, now I’m more focused on triathlons.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

The people. Everyone here is very encouraging and willing to help you in any way they can.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I’m signed up for Madison Half Ironman 2018, in hopes of beating my time from last year.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I’m in Indiana Hoosier basketball fan. My brother played for them on the 2002-2006 team. Go Hoosiers!

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

Born in a small town in Turkey. Dad was a physics teacher and mom is a retired primary school teacher. Youngest of 3 kids and my sisters are 7 years older than me (twins). I had glaucoma on my left eye almost since birth. I had tens of surgeries until I started high school, managed to succeed in school, and that experience has helped me learn how to go beyond excuses.

I played soccer while growing up and had a BMX bike I was biking everywhere with. That’s my short sports background :-)

Triathlon journey started in 2015. I decided to run a half-marathon for my dad’s memory. But I never tried long distance running or biking or swimming before. My first run I was wasted after less than a quarter mile. I coached myself and successfully finished my first half-marathon on March 2016. After that, me being me as I like competing with myself, I kept asking the question whether I can ever finish an Ironman and wanted to try Ironman 70.3 to begin with.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

This is my second year. When I decided to go for 70.3 distance, I was literally swimming like a frog and had about 4 months to train for Racine 70.3. At that point, getting in touch with SBR was the best thing I could have ever done. I joined SBR in May 2016 after my first half-marathon following a convincing meeting with Bill to join some SBR group training as well as have Coach Mali coach me for my first 70.3. Thanks to getting coached by SBR and Mali, my Ironman 70.3 story also went well and I finished two 70.3 races on my first season. And I cut off over an hour on 70.3 distance in the following season.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I have a friend who is a veteran/retired Ironman. He had been a little worried about me and my (little too aggressive) training plans. He has strongly suggested that I checkout SBR at least for group training options.

One reason I’ve stayed is the coaches. First, I saw improvements beyond my expectations. I am so grateful for all SBR coaches for making that possible. Second, I believe the future can be better (stronger and faster) and SBR coaches can help me get there. I believe in the expertise SBR coaches bring to the table.

I also love the upbeat and friendly SBR athlete crowd. I always feel comfortable around them and conversation is enjoyable. I also feel happy hearing about their successes. The support we provide each other is also pretty amazing.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

Cycling classes (PBC). A ride that is cleverly designed, fun, engaging and challenging. PBC also provides a good environment for chatting w/ fellow athletes, which is an additional fun.

I have also heard a lot of good things about the winter 24-hour ride challenge as well as the winter triathlon SBR organizes. I am planning on giving them a shot soon too.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

I would like to think that I am a runner at core, but my A races have been triathlons, and I love the 70.3 distance. It provides a great challenge and manageable time commitment to train for and there is always something you can improve on. It keeps a hyperactive guy like me still interested, as there is always something else I could be doing better.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

Personal attention from coaches tops the list. Group classes are also designed according to each athlete’s ability and current level of fitness. Coaches pay close attention to each athlete’s needs and progress. I also really like the SBR athlete crowd and the amazing peer support, as I have stated before.

What are your training and/or racing goals for 2018?

I am planning on working hard to take a shot at getting even faster at my annual March half-marathon and at 70.3 distance. Next year is also going to be a big year for me, as I will be taking on the challenge of finishing my first full Ironman in Madison.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I am from a different country but have only been in 2 countries (Turkey and USA) up until last year.

I love computers, math and numbers. They not only help me in my career at Epic, but also once helped me find Bill’s mistake on total yardage calculation in a swimming workout ;-)

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

I grew up in Rhinelander, WI, got a bachelor’s degree in biology at UW-Stevens Point, got my master’s at UMN in the Twin Cities, and then moved to the Madison area to marry my husband, who teaches at Waunakee High School, and pursue my PhD in plant breeding and genetics at UW-Madison. Besides triathlon, I enjoy reading, drinking coffee, and an occasional craft project.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I picked up triathlon as a beginner with the UW-Madison club when I started my PhD in the fall of 2014. I’d done some track and cross-country skiing in high school. I’ve kept skiing, but I’ll be returning to the outdoor track for the first time with SBR this summer (no signs of having missed the track yet….).

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

My favorite part about training with SBR so far is the open water swims, which I did for the first time last summer. I love an outdoor, early morning swim. That said, I’m very much looking forward to getting to know the other athletes now that I’m joining for ‘head out of the water’ activities this summer!

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I’m going to race the Midwest Collegiate Conference Olympic-distance races to do my part to get the Badger ladies back on top of the conference standings. In terms of the training, I’m looking forward to improving my triathlon all around, but especially through building strength on the bike.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

After finishing my master’s degree, I took a “break” and spent a year living in Germany as a cultural ambassador, having received the Congress Bundestag Exchange for Young Professionals fellowship. The year abroad taught me to embrace changes and challenges.

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

Started my athletic journey by running track in high school and cross county in college at the D1 level for on year (then decided I should really study more). I transitioned into cycling in 2002 after a career as a marathoner. I am a competitive minded athlete who enjoys pushing himself against the clock, up a hill, or chasing down someone ahead of me on a bike - just to see if I can catch them. I need goals and challenges. Riding for fun only gets me so motivated.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

Probably on and off for about six or seven years. In addition to several cycle coaching sessions and cycling efficiency classes I also took a swim class about a year ago. For a non-swimmer this was a great way to ease into the sport.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

Over the many years of working with Jessica we have developed a clear understanding of how I am wired, what my goals are, what my career demands are and how I process and execute what she lays out on a weekly basis as part of the big plan. With only 4 days off over 46 days on my coast to coast cycling trip, having the ability to come back day after day while average about 95 miles and 3,700' of climbing each day will require being in great physical shape. It will also require me to be well versed in nutrition and recovery techniques. Having a disciplined training plan developed by Jessica has allowed me to maximize the return on the countless hours and miles I have been putting in as I prepare for my trip.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

Not everybody is on board with, or wants to dive deep into details of power and a power meter. Throw in WKO4, Training Peaks and My Fitness Pal as training aides and you can really spend a lot of time analyzing data. Jessica does a great job educating me on all of these things. I'm driven by results and when can see them by looking at the numbers as well as experiencing them on the bike it is a great thing.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

    Long distance cycling.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

Communication and flexibility! Every Sunday Jessica loads up Training Peaks with the workouts for the week ahead. In advance of that I email her what schedule clashes I expect that same week so she can take that into consideration when laying out the week. This has worked very well for both of us.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

Training with Jessica to ride coast to coast with Trek Travel on their Bucket List Trip. Going 3,800 miles from Astoria, Oregon to Portland, Maine, leaving August 20th and finishing October 4th.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I qualified for, and ran the Boston Marathon. Having grown up in the Boston area when Bostonians, not Kenyans, used to win the Patriots Day race, it inspired me to set to qualifying and running for of these goals. What a thrill it was to line up in Hopkinton and finish at the Pru in downtown Boston. Seems like only yesterday though it has already been nearly 25 years ago!

I’m a junior at UW majoring in nursing with a certificate in global health. I enjoy studying anything related to the health sciences. My hometown is Green Bay, WI. I’ve been doing triathlon for four years, and I love training all the disciplines.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

    Triathlon!

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

I’m just starting with SBR, but this season I’d like to get to know SBR members. I want to find a motivating environment to train.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

Place higher than last year at age-group nationals. Be the 1st place colligate division male at MWCTC races.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I went to Nepal last summer for a course in health disparities. In my future career I’d love to travel to be involved in global health policy.

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

Originally from a small fishing village called Rathmullan in North West Ireland I moved here to Madison in 2007. Oldest of 8 kids. I grew up playing football or soccer and never really got into long distance running till I came to the States and only started biking 5 years ago. Always had a passion for working on cars and I always try to be the best I can at everything I put my mind to.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

This is my second full season with SBR and I’m really enjoying the craic** and the competition in the classes along with the tough but fun workouts!

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I heard good thing’s about SBR and wanted to give it a go and see for myself. Another reason was the coaches. They are well experienced/knowledgeable and have a good background in swimming, biking and running.

I stayed with them because after the first year I saw huge improvements/results over the course of one indoor season so I was excited to see how far I could keep getting better and stronger.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

I enjoy the Christmas movie rides and the 24hr ride for charity. There is also a indoor triathlon over the winter months which is pretty cool. Having Rocket bike Studio under the same roof for repairs is awesome along with a professional bike fitting studio!

What sport do you primarily participate in?

I usually do a lot of charity bike rides and a few half marathons each year so biking and running are my main sports.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

At SBR we ride our own bikes on a Computrainer. I like it cause the classes are fairly small with 14 people and you get more one on one time with the coach.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

This year I’m taking on a huge challenge and doing The Race in Donegal which takes place in March. After that I may do a Half Ironman or maybe even a full. We’ll see what the body says!

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

When I was younger I used to drive a mobile grocery van around rural Donegal delivering groceries to the elderly who had no way of getting to the shops. One lady used to buy 16 loaves of bread every week!

**"Craic" (/kræk/ KRAK) or "crack" is a term for news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation, particularly prominent in Ireland. What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

The only one I do! Morning Masters (Personal Best Swimming)

What sport do you primarily participate in?

Swimming, though I would love to add cycling to my list. As the dad to 2 small kids, however, my bike and trainer are currently gathering dust. I have done one indoor triathlon, and one outdoor triathlon however, and have simply reaffirmed my hate of running.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

Convenience, cost and a great workout.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I’m simply looking to swim more consistently, and stay/get in decent shape so I can keep up with my family.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I served on the board of directors for USA Swimming for 8 years, including 2 as the Athlete’s Vice-President. As an amateur sports governing body of 300,000+ members, I was the lead athlete voice at the Board level of the sport, pushing for athlete’s rights.

I grew up in the Milwaukee area and moved to Madison in my twenties. I graduated from UW-Madison in 1981, and have been a practicing Physical Therapist since then. After taking over twenty years off from sports, I decided to make a comeback in 2011 and sign up for a triathlon. Before that I was a runner and played basketball. So not knowing anything about triathlon, I trained on my own and completed a sprint. Well the rest is history, I have now completed 2 IMWI, Escape From Alcatraz triathlon, multiple sprints and Olympic distance triathlons and running races. I am an older athlete who wants to keep going as long as I can.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I started with SBR in February of 2015.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

After trying some other team coaching, I was pretty sure I was going to just train on my own, but with some gentle nudging from a trainer in town a meeting was set up with Coach Bill and myself just to talk. Well I knew in 5 minutes, that I had found someone who I could work with. I enjoy the one on one coaching with Coach Bill and all the classes that are offered here during the winter and in the summer such as cycling, swimming, running, Every class is well planned out and coached. I never feel pressured and I can just be myself. I have had great success with Jessica for my bike fits, too!

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

There are too many to choose from, but I would say the one-on-one coaching with Coach Bill. The swimming program stands out as one of my favorite programs and The Winter Wonderland Indoor Triathlon, coming up in February.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

I participate in triathlons all distances. I am a runner at heart though.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

I like the consistency and the great communication I receive with the one-on-one coaching. I appreciate the attention to every detail and the progress I have been making in the short time since I started with SBR. The athletes here are so welcoming and it is just plain fun to be around SBR.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I have 3 planned half Ironman races, including IM Wisconsin 70.3, Racine 70.3 , and Steelhead 70.3. I have multiple running races planned, cycling events, and swimming events too. My goals are to get faster at each one and be more competitive in my age group.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

Not many people know that I love to jump rope and that I performed at Summerfest doing a routine with a group of adults and that I can still do some of the tricks. You can ask me to show you anytime and I like to teach people the correct way to jump rope!!!

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

Cycling captivated me on my very first training ride. A high school sophomore, I began training with a good friend for an epic late spring ride from my home in Chicago “all the way to Lake Geneva”. Once I recovered, I realized I found a whole new sense of freedom, fresh air and accomplishment. That was 1972! Since then I logged over 100,000 very memorable miles. As for the rest of my existence, I’ve been married to my exceptionally supportive wife Sue for 36 years and am retired after a long, enjoyable and rewarding career in environmental engineering.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I started with SBR in July of 2013 (shortly after I DNF’d the HHH - a good of example of my results when, for a short while, I tried to be my own coach! - see next question)

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

I am a strong believer in the value that dedicated experts can bring to just about anything. That principle led to many successes in my engineering work. So when I began to seriously tackle challenge rides it never occurred to me not to seek the help of expert coaches.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

The personal, one on one coaching - and talking to Peter about bikes at Rocket Bikes.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

    Cycling

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

The coaches really are dedicated and really do have a ton of knowledge - and for a very reasonable additional fee they even laugh at my jokes….well most of time anyway.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

HHH 200K - this year, no Pugsley, no tandem- just my cool new Alchemy and hopefully a strong finish.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

Most people know I am a retired engineer. But I also studied art and photography and, over the years, occasionally moonlighted as a photographer and illustrator. I am currently working on illustrations for a series of articles on aviation and radio pioneer Zeh Bouck. You will probably have to Google that.

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

I’m originally from Chicago and did my first triathlon in 2012 after connecting with a paratriathlon club in Chicago called Dare2tri. Since then, I started competing internationally with the USA Paratriathlon team in 2014. I compete in the wheelchair division, so I use a handcycle for the bike segment and racing wheelchair for the run segment of a triathlon.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

I’ve been training with SBR ever since I moved to Madison about 2.5 years ago.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

When I moved to Madison I was looking for a group that offered Computrainer classes and loved that SBR also had training opportunities in the pool and open water. I’ve stayed because the coaches at SBR really care about all of the athletes and always make sure the workouts are challenging and informational.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

I love the open water classes with SBR. Each class has a specific purpose and well thought out workout, which I think is unique for open water swimming.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

Triathlon, but I started competing in cross country skiing this past year.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

I love the community that I’ve met through SBR.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

I’m trying to qualify for the 2018 Paralympic team for Nordic skiing, so that is my main focus this year. Hopefully, I’ll still do a few triathlons this summer.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

I am currently the Triathlon World Champion in my division, PT-1.

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

Katie - I’m originally from Georgia and I moved to Wisconsin 5 years ago for grad school and found a job and have been here ever since. I played basketball, softball and soccer growing up.

Tim - I moved here from California 7 years ago for a job. My background is more in team sports, playing baseball, football, lacrosse and wrestling at various times in high school and college.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

    Katie - 3 years

Tim - almost 5 years now

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

Katie - I’ve wanted to get into triathlons and didn’t know how and Tim was part of SBR so I wanted to join him and the group.

Tim - I mainly joined for the indoor cycling group, but the coaches help out with all aspects of triathlon and they’re great to work with.

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

Katie - The cycling classes, both indoor and outdoor are great as I feel I have really improved my cycling and they are just fun! (Except erg mode….)

Tim - The cycling classes are great. The special events they put on for the winter, like the movie days are fantastic.

What sport do you primarily participate in?

Katie - Running, but more cycling now

Tim - Traditionally running, but I’m trying to get better in cycling

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

Katie - The people. I’ve got to meet a lot of great people and made great friends who I chat with on a daily basis and find as a great source of encouragement as I make my way to Ironman.

Tim - I like the people as well, and the fact that we work on our own goals. There’s always stuff to do.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

Katie - Finish Ironman Wisconsin and get a corgi at the finish line.

Tim - None really. I’m here to support Katie for Ironman, though I’ll be doing the 70.3 and a few half marathons as well.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

Katie - I’m always laughing so my nickname is Giggles.

Tim - I’m always down for a good game of trivia. When I lived in California, I got myself on to 5 game shows. Still haven’t made it to Jeopardy though.

  • Provide a little background info about yourself.

Jeanne – I never considered myself an athlete, although I have always been active in the outdoors. I ran a few 5/10Ks in my early 20’s then had kids…3 in 2 years…and ran a few miles here and there when I could fit it in. I was encouraged by some other moms on the sideline of a soccer field to join them in training for a half marathon, then came marathons. I was volunteering at Ironman Wisconsin with high schoolers during one of the early years of IMWI, and found myself crying at the finish line and knowing I had to do one.

Steve – My background as a runner and biker was very occasional going back to college and beyond. Due to a basketball injury I pretty much quit running and spent more time coaching youth sports and hunting and fishing than thinking about training.

How long have you been affiliated with SBR?

Jeanne - I was in SBR’s very first PBC class – 4 of us on static trainers. And I loved it. I have been involved with SBR in some way since that class in 2006 – PBC every year, open water swimming when Ironman training, a running class which led me to a marathon PR, and some one-on-one coaching.

Steve – I think I started riding with SBR about 5 years ago. We had been doing a spin class at the Y but after the first year it went steadily downhill in quality.

Why did you join SBR? Why have you stayed?

Jeanne - PBC is a blast, it keeps me in good bike shape during the winter, and I ride much harder than I would if I were on a trainer in my basement. I love the camaraderie. Training with a group is both fun and motivating; and I need the focus of coached workout.

Steve – I started riding again because I was tired of sitting around putting on 15 pounds every winter and then hoping I would lose it all during the summer. Riding at the Y helped me not to gain as much weight but riding at SBR led me to actually losing weight in the winter! Shortly after starting at SBR I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which gave me even more of an incentive to be active. With the help of biking I was able to get my A1C under control and I stopped taking insulin after 90 days!

What is your favorite class, service, or event with SBR?

Jeanne – see above ;-) PBC. I also love the OWS workout where IM veterans get to help the first timers in training with “course simulation.”

Steve – I only do bike classes. I do PBC in the mornings and I also do the Saturday ride.

Jeanne & Steve - THE COFFEE!!!!

What sport do you primarily participate in?

Jeanne – I have done 5 Ironmans. My current endurance sport of choice is trail running, with my longest event thus far a 40-miler. I am a runner at heart, and I love being in the woods, so trail running is natural.

What is your favorite part about training with SBR?

Jeanne & Steve – We love that PBC is something we do together, along with the camaraderie of PBC classes and the variety of people that we have met over the years.

What are your training and/or racing goals this year?

Jeanne – I would like to do a 50-mile and/or 100K trail run this year.

Steve – I don’t do “events,” my goal is to stay healthy.

What is something interesting about yourself that people might not know?

Jeanne & Steve – we will be married 30 years in June! We have 3 sons, 2 beautiful daughters-in-law, and one amazing granddaughter, along with 2 dogs and 2 grand-dogs.

Jeanne – the other thing I must say is that Steve has been wonderfully supportive in my endurance training and events, can’t imagine having done all those without him. Family means so much, they have all been great - one of my sons drove out to Lake Placid with me. My kids have kayaked and boated near me while open water swimming (they may have also thrown a fishing line in the water while doing so), met me at aid stations in the middle of the woods, too many stories to tell.
