ABOUT OUR CLASSES:

Training with a group can be motivating, engaging, and rewarding.  Our group practices meet at regular intervals and provide a fun and supportive environment.  Our classes have a good number of athletes but are never too large in number.  We truly believe in a low coach-to-athlete ratio to provide the best coaching possible in our group settings.  We will be alongside you leading, teaching, and motivating–but not working out with you.  At our classes, you are our focus, and we strive for quality training at every workout.  Visit the Small Group Coaching page for more details on the classes below.

Swimming Group Practices

  • Pool swim practices are held at the Verona Area High School Aquatics Center (the new high school).  Sessions run Tuesday/Thursday for most of the year in sessions that are about 2-3 months each.

  • Open water swim practices have four options a week and run from mid-May until Ironman Wisconsin (early September) and are held primarily at Fireman’s Park in Verona (right across from SBR).  Around mid-August, we move our practices to Lake Monona.  Most swimmers will join us for 1-2 days per week.

Cycling Group Practices

  • Our indoor rides run from November through April and take place in our CompuTrainer studio.

  • Our outdoor rides run from May through August and have two options each week with most athletes choosing one.  We often ride from the SBR parking lot but occasionally meet at another designated spot around Verona, Paoli, or even Blue Mound State Park for an occasional, specific workout.

Running Group Practices

  • Our run program meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from May through August.  On Tuesdays, we run from various area locations and focus on endurance; on Thursdays we do interval work on the track at Badger Ridge Middle School in Verona (the old Verona high school).

ABOUT OUR STUDIO

Our studio is located at 507 Bruce Street in Verona, Wisconsin.  We have a CompuTrainer studio where we host our indoor Performance-Based Cycling (PBC) classes, along with a couple indoor events over the winter.  Athletes bring their own bike to set up on the CompuTrainer, which allows them to have a more comfortable, authentic ride on a bike that fits them well as opposed to a spin bike.  Training on the CompuTrainer also provides athletes with data, like cadence, power, pedal efficiency, and more, along with the ability to practice bike skills, like shifting.

We also have an Eval Room with a treadmill where we do run evaluations and with a table for us to hold athlete meetings.

SBR HISTORY

SBR is proud to serve the Madison/Verona area as the first endurance performance center since 2005.

Founder and co-owner Jessica Laufenberg created SBR with a passion for combining personalized attention, a social atmosphere, and athlete education into triathlon training.  The first studio opened in 2005 in downtown Verona.  Here she created the CompuTrainer studio and philosophy that SBR is known for today.  Shortly thereafter, the studio moved to Venture Court.

For years, Jessica ran the business and head coached the athletes at SBR.  She eventually brought on some part-time coaches as the business and athlete community continued to grow.

After about eleven years in the lead role, Jessica decided it was time for her to step back to focus on other things, and in 2016 she sold the majority of the business to SBR’s current head coach, Bill Martin, who had been working for SBR the three years prior and continuing his involvement in the triathlon community through coaching and competing.  Tammy Coplien and Mark Kochanski also became co-owners of the business after being longtime athletes and supporters of SBR.  Jessica has continued to stay on as a co-owner and advisor for the business.

After over a decade on Venture Court, the opportunity arose from the Aldo Partners who owned the building at 507 Bruce Street to move SBR in August of 2018.  It was then that SBR made the move to their new home on the Ironman loop.

We’re excited to offer our quality services in our new space and to continue our involvement in the endurance sport community.  You’re the reason we do what we do, and we’re so grateful for your support.  Whether you’re out riding the loop, hanging out at Fireman’s Park, or supporting another local business, stop by and say “Hi!”
